If America were a company and not a country, we would have long ago dissolved the corporation, split the blanket, and gone our separate ways.
What still holds this disputatious and divided people together?
Consider. In announcing the $900 billion stimulus bill to deal with the pandemic, Speaker Nancy Pelosi did not mention that the gifts for her distressed countrymen and women at Christmas would have been twice as large had she taken
President Trump’s offer of $1.8 trillion in October.
Why did the speaker slap that offer away?
“The President only wants his name on a check to go out before Election Day and for the market to go up,” she told House Democrats.
Rather than let Donald Trump take credit, Pelosi stiffed millions of Americans.
Sunday, however, the speaker took time for a statement to hail the removal of Robert E. Lee’s statue from Statuary Hall. “Welcome news,” said the speaker. “Congress will continue our work to rid the Capitol of homages to hate.”
Lee had stood in a place of honor in the Capitol for decades. When exactly did the statue of the general become a homage to hate?
Both episodes point up an unpleasant truth.
Our dysfunctional American family agrees upon less and less.
By mid-November, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, 52% of Republicans thought Donald Trump had “rightfully won.” Sixty-eight percent of Republicans thought the election was “rigged.” A third of independents, and even 10% of Democrats, agreed.
This month, a Fox poll found that a third of all registered voters believe the 2020 election was stolen from Trump, with 78% of those who voted for Trump expressing that view.
In the long term, not only is the election of 2020 going to be suspect. Also, belief in one of the sacraments of secular democracy, universal suffrage, is going to suffer.
Moreover, the issues that divide us now go increasingly to the faith of what defines us as a nation and a people.
A slice of our intellectual elite emphatically agrees with the New York Times’ Project 1619, which decrees that the real birth date of this nation was neither 1776 nor 1789, but the year that the first slave ship arrived in Virginia.
To this influential cohort, enslavement of Black people brought from Africa and dispossession and destruction of the indigenous tribes that European settlers found here are the defining events of our history.
And all who participated in these crimes against humanity or refused to condemn them are undeserving of exaltation.
Not only Lee, but Columbus and Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Jackson, TR and Wilson are all racist white men whose disgraceful and even criminal conduct disqualifies them from a place of honor in the American pantheon of 2020. All statues of such men need to come down to cleanse us of the stain of having honored them.
Pelosi says that such statues are “homages to hate.”
She may not have thought so five or 10 years ago, but she believes that now.
What has taken place is a mass conversion.
Yet, there is another America that still cherishes the nation these men created. And, as did their fathers, grandfathers and ancestors, these Americans have shown a willingness to fight and die in her defense.
Thus do we Americans disagree on the most fundamental of issues.
Was America, is America, with all its sins and virtues and all its achievements, a country to be cherished, loved and defended? Or is America a country of whose history we should all be ashamed?
Part of America also believes that discovery in the Constitution of a woman’s right to an abortion and a right of homosexuals to marry were major milestones of progress toward a more moral America.
Others see these as long strides away from the Christian country we used to be, a social and moral decline toward the same quiet death that has come to other civilizations and nations that went before us.
In short, we Americans disagree on whether our country is a good and great nation worth defending, or a place that needs a deep cultural cleansing of its sins.
And we have no common code of morality. One side is rooted in modernism and secularism and the other in the teachings of the Old and New Testament, Christian tradition and a natural law written on the human heart that is superior to man-made law.
People who disagree upon such basic beliefs naturally drift apart, as we Americans are doing today.
Political questions arise out of these fundamental differences, and they are not insignificant.
Can a republic as fractured and splintered as ours is — racially, ethnically, politically, culturally, morally — with a population who do not share the same belief about whether their nation is good and great or failed and evil, endure? And for how long?
What successful models from history do we see of nations that took the kind of risks we are taking with our republic?

I’m glad you have come to understand that the high rate of Latino immigration has not been a leading factor in the demise of the United States (there is little mention of Latinos). What has caused the fracture to become so profound is the moral drift of the largely white upper middle class and blacks from the main body of white America. High rate of Latino immigration while lowering future economic growth may even be a net positive in keeping the country together as seen from their voting behavior this year.

If this election was stolen, or purchased, by the fraudulent counting of hundreds of thousands of phony ballots in swing states and 13 to 16 million across the country, then none of the rest is true.
If the election should have gone to Donald Trump with an increase of 11 million votes over his 2016 totals, then the country is actually not much different than what it was in 1958. We’re still moral, Christian, favor traditional marriage, work hard for our livelihood, oppose illegal immigration, honor brave men who fought on both sides of the Civil War and oppose the socialism of borrowed money that the Congress has imposed on us.

I believe that the country cannot hold together, given the willful amnesia and rejection by the left wing of what we assumed were the American verities. I have been promoting the idea of secession of the central states, hopefully focused on the Texas Republic of antiquity that stood for freedom and the promise of America as it was understood at that time, i.e. based on the founding principles of God and the Constitution. Any sort of movement to overtake the leftist states on the coasts as well as the current “deep state” lawlessness on the federal level, is bound to result in great violence and misery. Better that the states that have retained a modicum of sanity in these awful and morally-challenged times, should go their separate way. I suspect that the military remaining at the disposal of the leftist states will quickly abandon their posts in foreign lands that we have “invaded” and will return to defend our American heartland, the home of their birth and consciences and true loyalties. Violence will not be the answer. Adherence to some localized ideal, as exemplified by the State of Texas, which originated the multi-state lawsuit a couple of weeks ago that attempted to overturn the fraudulent election, will be our salvation. Texas showed us the way this time, by way of a well-considered constitutional challenge to the lawlessness. It also showed us the way in 1836 at the Alamo. Always defensive, and always based upon principle.
The solution is obvious. Terminate the Fed Gov. Terminate the United States of America corporation. Allow the 50 states to become countries. Allow 50 experiments on how to govern and withing a year there will be clear winners and losers. People will vote with their feet as is now happening in California with their overbearing taxation and stifling regulations.
The Fed Gov is the problem. Excise it. That gets rid of the funny money Federal Reserve and their banking mafia. It gets rid of the central control point that (((they))) use to control the country. It takes quite a bit more effort to bribe 50 entities than 1.
It also kills the Democrat and Republican party system. They may try to maintain their stranglehold on the political process, but I doubt they would be successful because the people will reject their phony democracy bullshit once the deck is reshuffled by killing off the Fed Gov.

I agree that modern secular morality has far more flaws but I don’t think Christianity is innocent in all this. Christianity over time seems to foment its own form of race denial unless kept in check.

I know he’s gotten in trouble in the past for being more explicit.
This is indeed the real issue, but I disagree that it’s specifically American. It’s a strikingly similar situation in Western Europe, Canada, and Australia. (And probably New Zealand too, people always forget about New Zealand.)

Secularism is pretty commonly agreed upon in Western Europe. Race and immigration are the big issues.

A superb point, but I will add this. It is not just the larger societal family. It is often one’s OWN family, and friends. Regarding the loss of the affection and respect of one’s own family, I cannot do better than what a commenter once wrote. His poignant words resonate: “I feel alone.” Well, at least his aloneness is not total, because at this website, this pub, he and others like him are not deplorable; quite the contrary.

Properly cogitated, none of these views contradicts the essential conservatism of Mr. Buchanan, which is that of a believer and a defender of true freedom.

As the Supreme Court has Original Jurisdiction regarding arguments between states, the Court lost its moral authority by ducking the Texas case. What happened to the three “conservative” justices Trump appointed? Were they swayed by the Chief Justice, or were they afraid for their own and their families safety? It was reported that Roberts was screaming at the others, that they could not take up the case because of RIOTS! Kudos to Justices Thomas and Alito for being the only ones with courage.
Basically agree. When a citizen presents copious evidence of electoral fraud, the court simply says he has no standing. Which is a perverted way of saying the law has no standing. The courts were supposed to be a check on rogue legislators. Now the Justice check is gone. Without it, democracy cannot subsist. Game over.

Cons should use 2020 as excuse for a massive tax revolt. Just like boomers burned draft cards in the 60s, the cons should say they want no more to do with the current US that cheats so spectacularly in elections. Besides, how can cons do anything in D.C., a town where 96% of people are Democrats? Imagine Democratic politicians operating in a capital that is 96% conservative.
Let there be two Americas. One side pays taxes to America 1, the other side pays taxes to America 2. People of America 1 vote for their leaders, and people of America 2 vote for their leaders. That way, One America can have someone like Biden, the other America can have someone like Trump.
Now, some things will be of shared use, like upkeep of national parks and access to natural resources. And utilities like water and electricity. But they would have separate schools. Let one America teach ‘white guilt’ while the other America teaches patriotism. Let one America worship homos, and let other America worship God and Jesus.

Though seemingly impossible, it just might be possible given what happened in 2020, actually since 2016. Jews are so insistent on “What we want!!” that they pulled all the stops since Trump’s election to destroy every standard and rule of law. Not only Russia Hoax and bogus Ukraine impeachment but Big Tech censorship, denial of financial service to dissidents, Covid hysteria to destroy the Trump economy, BLM riots, and etc. Jews use Antifa to attack law-abiding Americans. And then the big fraudulent election, and media complicity.
2020 has been such a crisis year, mainly due to Jewish supremacist obnoxiousness, that it is about time for patriots to finally call for a breakup. Letting Jewish Power get away with 2020 is like letting someone get away with rape. Weaklings will cower before Jews and plead in tone of appeasement, “Oh, you kicked our ass real good this year. And if libs want more electoral fraud, let them have it. Cons have cleaner elections to elect their own kind. Also, with most Jews being in Lib America, the conservative America can be relatively free of Jewish influence.

Logically, every US citizen would automatically be a citizen of each of the 50 new countries.
I imaging, for example, a 5 year grace period would probably allow people to choose which citizenship they will keep and which ones they will relinquish. During that time they can vote with their feet.
As California fails economically, their inhabitants will flee and it will become a failed country. It will be annexed by another entity that’s still functioning. Wash, Rinse, Repeat till there are maybe a dozen countries with sustainable policies.
Now if California’s gov’t decides to impose border controls to physically prevent people from leaving as they are now attempting to impose exit taxes for the people that are leaving, that will just hasten their downfall and there will be no Fed Gov to help prop them up.

Urban populations launch empires, not peasantries. All of America’s traditional institutions have now failed. Democracy is being rejected as “racist”, which is code for saying democracy is incompatible with empire. America’s political institutions were created by a small homogeneous isolated peasantry with a tiny urban population. Now we have a huge urban population with zero ties to traditional America.
The peasantry has now been entirely excluded from all political input, symbolized by Trump. The urban imperialists are searching for a pretext to sweep away the last remnants of Constitutional rule. They will find it. America is a house of cards run by hostile immigrants who have excluded rural Americans, n the latter have zero loyalty to the imperial state. N they should have zero loyalty.
But how can we have geographical separation? Too many whites are in the South with the blacks.
Too many Anglos are with the browns in the SW.
Too many Repugs and Dummycrats live in same state and locales.
When the USSR broke up, the republics were more-or-less made up of certain ethnic majorities. Like Lithuanians in Lithuania, Kazakhis in Kazakhstan. And those people had deep roots in the land.
US is a young nation, and people from all over spread across in all directions.
There was a time when most blacks were in the South, but tons of them moved up north, even to Minneapolis. And whites in some of the whitest states are most far-gone in PC idiocy.
So, the best way is something like bi-nationalism. Northern Ireland has something similar. The Protestants and Catholics both live there but they have separate loyalties.
Imagine the following scenario.
Suppose there’s a territory with 1000 people. Suppose 500 have A values and the other 500 have B values. So, People A and People B distrust one another. But suppose they are economically so interdependent and intermingled demographically. So, it’s not possible to divide the domain in half into A land and B land. A’s and B’s must live together.
Still, suppose they decide to have separate governments. A’s vote for their own politicians, and B’s do the same. A’s pay taxes to A government, and B’s pay taxes to B government. Now, some of their taxes go to common use, such as utilities and other shared interests.
But when it comes to schools and governance, they have separate ways and rules. And the rules of one doesn’t apply to the other. So, if B government allows gun ownership, B folks can own guns. if A government bans gun ownership, A folks can’t have guns and can be prosecuted by A government. But A government cannot prosecute B folks for having guns as B folks live under B rule.
Also, if A folks have ‘gay marriage’, it doesn’t apply to B folks. If B folks ban ‘gay marriage’, such thing cannot be recognized by B government.
Imagine an island where Orthodox Jews and Fundamental Muslims must live side by side. Suppose they are 50/50 in number. What would be the best way to solve the differences? The best way would be to divide the island in half with Jews on one side and Muslims on the other side. But suppose that is not impossible and Jews and Muslims must live together. Then, the only sane option is bi-nationalism. Jews elect their own government and have their own capitol, and Muslims have the same. They live together on the same island but are governed separately.
A crude version of this exists in Bosnia-Herzegovina among the Croats, Muslims, and Serbs.

The English, French, Dutch, Swedes, and Spanish are indeed “white”, but were not “ethnically coherent”.

Here’s a theory. The first prerequisite of democracy is a population that is entirely homogeneous in every way. If everybody follows the same religion, if everybody belongs to the same ethnic group, if there are no social classes, if everybody belongs to the same sex and everybody holds essentially the same opinions on all social, cultural, political and economic issues and everybody has exactly the same interests then democracy will work.
If a population includes groups that have different interests then democracy will not work.
To make democracy work we would have to become the Borg.
