In this issue brief, we examined three different measures of what is purchased in America. We found that about half of the manufactured goods that Americans purchased in 2023 was made in America using domestic inputs. More precisely, we estimate that domestic content comprised 52 percent of the value of gross domestic purchases of manufactured goods in 2023. This measure is lower than the domestically-produced content measure of 63 percent, which includes the value of imported inputs (i.e. foreign content in domestic output).

From 1997 the nominal dollar value of domestic content grew approximately at inflation’s pace, while imports of finished goods grew much faster.

There’s also a table with domestic content percentages for each manufacturing commodity group.

Tariffs imposed on China are paid by the US importers. Just like sales tax is paid by the customers. And mass layoffs in American manufacturing and transportation sector already began.

Re-birth of American Manufacturing will never happen. Net profits in this sector are about 5% PER YEAR. Why bother with manufacturing if Tesla stock can (and will !!!) soar 10% in 24 HOURS !

Another disadvantage of manufacturing is total cost/marginal cost ratio. In other words it costs $1 to make a widget but one must spend $1M on R&D, plant & machinery first. Let somebody else spend $1M in those costs. We will just buy and complain how China takes advantage of the US.

I am not so sure China won here. We have been printing up dollars that will rapidly depreciate in value in the future and giving them to the Chinese in exchange for manufactured goods. That looks like a better deal for us than them. The high tariffs Trump imposed would have actually ended that. The Chinese would then have focused more on producing for the domestic market, providing goods for their own people and raising their standard of living. Trump lowering the tariffs back down will prevent that.

There will definitely be casualties, but the vast majority of businesses won’t even notice, given that exports to the USA are a tiny percentage of Chinese exports; China has plenty of friends around the world, the US is a blip.

Studies of the last tariff war showed that Chinkland absorbed around 85% of the tariffs, and the US consumer absorbed around 15%.

The US consumer is not stupid enough to pay for tariffs when they can get the same goods, say from Indonesia, without tariffs … and thus at a cheaper price.

It was used by world empires when their economies were strong. The Brits were protectionist until the Industrial Revolution, then they promoted the idea of “Free Trade” so that they could export their goods into foreign countries.

Their “free trade” was so successful that they became the most powerful empire on earth. Their eventual stagnation and rot was not due to “free trade” but other reasons.

In the same way, “free trade” in itself benefited the successors to the Brits, the USA in the 50s after GATT was established in 1947. The USA formed something like 50% of the world economy even though its population was on 5% of the world.

Tariffs did not fix the problems with the US workforce driving up labor prices, fix the structural economic problems causing short-term focus in US business, or in any way improve American competitiveness. They have simply pushed America towards a banana republic where there will be no exports and few imports, and everyone will make due with less.

For all the rah rah rah America types that say you should want “better” American products: American products litter the shelves of low-value stores across America. American products are not more valuable: usually they are inferior quality, made with cheaper materials and poor design compared to Chinese. The myth Chinese products are generally of poor quality is a boomer meme.

In my state of California, the Democrat governor and supermajority Democrat legislature extended Medicaid coverage to illegal aliens. Then the whole Medicaid program ran out of money. Legal US citizens would have lost their Medicaid coverage if the governor hadn’t managed to get a stop-gap loan to cover the losses. In the meantime, billions of dollars that should have gone to help legal US citizens were flushed down the toilet.

My understanding is that the cuts to Medicaid aren’t actually cuts. They’re limitations on growth accomplished by means of a return to the 80% federal matching rate from before Obama care. The states will now have to pay 20% instead of 10%. If they choose not to do that, they can explain that to their own damned voters.

More importantly, it is really dishonest to take one policy and conclude from that that Trump is indifferent to the White working class. It reminds me of idiots like Rand Paul complaining about tariffs raising prices without considering the deflationary effects of domestic energy production, or the AARP bitching about the same tariffs without bothering to notice the President’s no tax on SS policy that will offset those tariffs.

What Chinese fentanyl?

Fentanyl was first synthesised in 1960, by Dr Paul Janssen, a Belgian and the founder of Janssen Pharmaceutica which introduced the drug to various European countries.

China does make and export fentanyl to the US and other countries. But there is Zero evidence that the hundreds of thousands of fentanyl overdose deaths are due to Chinese made fentanyl. The ASSUMPTION, is that Mexican drug gangs get their precursors from China. The drug gangs then make fentanyl and smuggle it into the US

But then this ASSUMPTION is IRRATIONAL. If the narcotic involved is grown from the field, YES, drug gangs have to import them. Why? It takes many thousands of acres of land to grow the poppy plants in order to extract enough opium paste which could be converted into morphine and/or heroin in large quantity later.

But fentanyl is synthesized from the beginning. All the drug gangs need are good chemists. With the huge profit involved, they could easily hire the best chemists and make the precursors as well as fentanyl locally. Still, if China’s economy continues to grow and America’s continues to decline, as projected, the military balance will change in China’s favor. We don’t know what that final version will be yet. But it is unlikely that the Republican leadership will submit a bill to Trump that he doesn’t want to sign. If — like so many omnibus bills — it turns out to be full of poison pills, the leadership will most likely break up the bill into separate bills and start over. As of now, there is no bill to send to Trump.
