America’s “shadow president”, Mike Pompeo, has acknowledged that the assassination of Iran’s highest-ranking military general, Qassem Soleimani, was part of a broader strategy to restore “real deterrence” by eliminating presumed enemies of the United States. Pompeo’s comments at Stanford University’s Hoover Institute on January 13, put to rest earlier claims that the Iranian general had been killed to prevent “imminent attacks on U.S. targets.” Those claims have since been discredited by independent journalists and mainstream publications that have shown that the assassination was prepared months in advance. In truth, Soleimani was killed to roll back Iran’s influence in Iraq and to reverse the effects Washington’s catastrophic counterinsurgency operation that removed the mainly Sunni-Baathist party from power creating a vacuum that was filled by Iranian-backed militias. The Solemani assassination was just the latest transgression in a conflict that dates back 17 years.

Pompeo’s hand in the assassination is not really in doubt. As the New York Times noted in an article two weeks ago: “Pompeo was the loudest voice in the administration pushing President Trump to kill Iran’s most important general”. The Times also credits the blustery Pompeo as the “chief architect of the rising tensions between the United States and Iran”…”he is in the unusual role of shaping national security policy.” (“Pompeo Upended Middle East by Pushing Trump to Kill Iranian General”, New York Times)

Pompeo is the “chief architect” of the administration’s failed Iran policy. It was Pompeo who pushed Trump to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, and Pompeo who promoted the economic blockade that has strangled the Iranian economy. Pompeo has also been the biggest proponent of Trump’s extrajudicial assassination policy whose first notable trophy was Iran’s most decorated and revered general, Solemani. The incident has set the Middle East ablaze. Even so, Pompeo has never shown the slightest sign of remorse nor has he offered his condolences to the millions of people across the Middle East who poured out into the streets to mourn the passing of their beloved hero. Their anguish means nothing to Pompeo who believes he is carrying out “God’s work” by eliminating anyone who stands in the way US ambitions in the region.

At the Stanford confab, Pompeo announced that he intends to move ahead with his plan to reestablish “deterrence” to discourage Tehran’s “malign activity.” Regrettably, Pompeo’s grasp of deterrence bears no resemblance to the original political and military doctrine. Traditionally, deterrence is a strategy “under which one power uses the threat of reprisal effectively to preclude an attack from an adversary power.” In practice this means that Country A will build up its nuclear arsenal with the intention of “deterring” Country B from launching an attack. The strategy is aimed at preserving the peace and avoiding unnecessary bloodshed. Pompeo’s interpretation of deterrence is aimed at liquidating the enemy not deterring him. It is a form of aggression that bears no resemblance to the original military doctrine. Here’s more from Reuters:.

“President Trump and those of us in his national security team are re-establishing deterrence – real deterrence ‒ against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said. “Your adversary must understand not only that you have the capacity to impose cost but that you’re in fact willing to do so,” Pompeo added.” (“Pompeo says Soleimani killing part of new strategy to deter U.S. foes”, Reuters)

Once again, Pompeo is twisting words to confuse his audience. Sure, it’s true that “Your adversary must understand not only that you have the capacity to impose cost but that you’re in fact willing to do so.” But it’s also true that the goal of deterrence is to deter the enemy from engaging in hostilities to begin with. That is the polar-opposite of killing the enemy. Pompeo appears to be stuck on this point.

In any event, a gangland-style hit –that is illegal under US statutes and international law– is not an example of deterrence. It’s barbarism masquerading as foreign policy doctrine. Pompeo knows that, just like he knows that targeted assassinations are powerful provocations that lead to over-reaction, tit-for-tat retaliation, and eventually a full-blown regionwide conflagration. Which seems to be the point. Pompeo wants to confront Iran in the one area in which the US excels, war. Why else would he kill Iran’s most admired leader?

Here’s more from Pompeo’s speech:

“We saw, not just in Iran, but in other places, too, where American deterrence was weak. We watched Russia’s 2014 occupation of the Crimea and support for aggression against Ukraine because deterrence had been undermined. We have resumed lethal support to the Ukrainian military.

China’s island building, too, in the South China Sea, and its brazen attempts to coerce American allies undermined deterrence. The Trump administration has ramped up naval exercises in the South China Sea, alongside our allies and friends and partners throughout the region.” (“The Restoration of Deterrence: The Iranian Example”, US Embassy and Consulates)

Now we’re getting down to brass tacks. This isn’t about Soleimani at all. It’s about the long list of foreign policy challenges the US now faces as new centers of power emerge (primarily Russia and China) putting more pressure on the post-WW2 “liberal” world order and hastening the decline of an aging hegemon who is fast losing its grip on global power. That is why Pompeo is invoking a new and more vicious foreign policy. Washington powerbrokers seem to believe that they need to take more reckless and violent measures to reverse present trends that are steadily eroding US power clearing the way for an emerging multi-polar world order. Taking these things into account, the Soleimani assassination can be seen for what it really is, a desperate attempt to turn back the clock to the early 1990’s following the dissolution of the Soviet Union when America ruled supreme and think-tank pundits proudly boasted of the “end of history” and the beginning of a glorious “American Century”, none of which has worked out according to plan.

“The importance of deterrence isn’t confined to Iran,” Pompeo said. “In all cases, we must deter foes to defend freedom. That’s the whole point of President Trump’s work to make our military the strongest it’s ever been.” (Reuters)

Pompeo wants a stronger and most costly military. He wants to use all the tools at his disposal to maintain Washington’s dominant position in the world, especially the instruments of coercion that can used to force rivals to comply with Washington’s diktats. And, he has invoked a new doctrine, The Pompeo Doctrine, to provide ideological cover for the anticipated bloody assault on foreign leaders and dignitaries. So far, no one has challenged Pompeo’s alarming policy-shift. There appears to be consensus among elites that the only way to arrest America’s relentless decline is by escalating the hostilities, intensifying the violence and widening the wars.

Pompeo’s announcement puts the country on a path to bigger and bloodier confrontations but, as yet, no one has lifted their voice in opposition.

  1. Pompeo’s speech, as, in effect, a confession as to his motives for the assassination, is also, in effect, a confession he committed a war crime. Should the yankee imperium loses relative power in the future and thus loses its exemption from war crimes consideration, Pompeo, if he travels abroad, may at some future point, face consequences.

I don’t think that Pompous Pompeo thinks things much past his own nose. Doesn’t he realize the action against Iran and Iraq (targeted assassinations) has put a bullseye on his and other top diplomat/military westerners??? Both sides play by the same rules, and when one side changes those rules, (most likely because they are loosing) the opponent gets to utilize the change also.

Remarkably, Brezhnev’s speeches both on the XXIV and XXV Party Congresses contained orders of magnitude more strategic grasp of the unfolding events and were much less monotonous propaganda fodder, despite one of them lasting almost 6 hours (don’t remember which Congress), than when Pompeo speaks for a minute or two. In fact, Pompeo manages, most of the time, in couple of phrases to produce the amount of non-sense, propaganda and sheer ignorance seldom encountered in history. But then again, this certified moron is Rupturist, belongs to some Old Testament fanatics who pass in the US for “Christians” and is at the service of Israel’s interests–an exhibit A of US political “elite”. God help us all.

  13. It’s worth noting that Pompeo is a Christian dispensationalist and a pro-Israel zealot. Why does Mike Whitney ignore these facts? Pompeo’s End Times eschatology and political alignment (with biblical Israel) have profound consequences. Yet Whitney prefers to look the other way.

This vile assassination is the direct by-product of Zio-Washington’s subordinate relationship with global Zionism. Why won’t Whitney come out and say this?

Sure, like all good Zionists, Pompeo supports the economic strangulation of Iran, Zio-Washington’s unconditional commitment to the Jewish state, Israel’s routine slaughter and/or maiming of non-Jews in the Occupied Territories, as well as Israel’s confiscation of the land (but purging of gentiles there) in the West Bank. This is all very apperrant.

But to what extent is the rise of this overweight warmonger in Washington attributable to his fanatical, unwavering, pro-Israel extremism?

    It’s absolutely key.

Unfortunately, Mike Whitney invariably avoids acknowledging or even exploring the Israel-factor in America’s distorted political universe, even though this extra-national force surely played a key role in the decision to have Solimani whacked. It was a Khazarian mafia hit, executed via Washington.

    And all the experts cheered.

Whitney’s persistent and craven omissions seriously undermine his analytical credibility.

    Says Whitney:

The Pompeo Doctrine, to provide ideological cover for the anticipated bloody assault on foreign leaders and dignitaries.

But the ‘leaders and dignitaries’ who are under Zio-American threat will be those who challenge Israel.

Don’t look now, but I would bet that those sick schemers in D.C. and Tel Aviv would love nothing more than for their provocations to elicit Iranian retaliatory assassinations of high ranking western figures, particularly if they did it as brazenly as the US did, as that would be the perfect pretext for rapid escalation to full scale war. This situation is no different than a grade school bully goading his victim with elbow jabs in the hallway every time he walks by, then loudly proclaiming his own blamelessness when the other kid finally has had enough and takes a swing at him. These people think rules and consistency are for little people. Pompeo knows he’s being entirely disingenuous, but he’s so confident that he’ll never share Soleimani’s fate that he doesn’t care. And he’s probably not wrong, because the Iranians know that playing by the same rules as the US/Israel cohort will only serve to cement their twisted narratives about Iran, and won’t even really hurt the global gangster empire. I think the Iranians will continue to be patient, and hit the empire where it really hurts–their pocket book–by further eroding the dollar hegemony alongside Russia and China, serving as the anchor point in the Middle East for all the nations that oppose the global empire.

  19. It is genuinely sad (& funny, in a nasty way) to consider US history post the USSR collapse.
Rather than take a leadership role as first among equals it decided to exploit it’s position as “sole superpower” to become, as suggested a gangland “boss”.

It is obviously untrue that Russian and Chinese leaders could be killed as easily as Soleimani made it to kill him, and those countries have the wherewithal to exacte severe retribution, which they would do. They would be forced to. Also, Iran is clearly in a different category to a superpower as it lacks deterrence to such an assassination. Could Soleimani’s political popularity in Iran have been behind the decision?

I wonder if there was the same kind of thinking about assassinating Soleimani as killing Reinhard Heydrich (British intelligence apparently saw Heydrich as a possible replacement for Hitler). Another analogy would be with Trotsky, like him Soleimani was an organiser of victory, but unlike Trotsky Soleimani had no rivals, as far as we know. If Soleimani had ever become the effective leader of Iran it would have come into serious conflict with America very quickly.

Trump probably did not expect the reaction in Iran and the uproar in the US at the prospect of a war starting. Iran was let down by its hero going to his death in such a hapless manner. The ultimate effect of the assassination and shootdown was a loss of confidence by both the US and Iranian governments in the use of military force. I think. It may be the beginning of a re-think and turning back to look again at diplomatic solutions. Russia and China having joint naval exercises with Iran in the Gulf of Oman is a huge warning sign for the US about continuing with Pompeo’s policy, especially with Russia.

  21. It is often said that the difference between the Soviet-era Pravda and the Western media is that the readers of the former knew they were being lied to.

Of course with the election of Trump and the popularisation of the term ‘fake news’, more people have become distrustful of the mainstream media, but in my view this is mostly limited to domestic affairs e.g. Trump supporters getting angry at CNN for something that denigrates their hero.

When it comes to foreign affairs, people are completely clueless, even after the massive deception that was the Iraq War. People simply don’t think they are being fed propaganda and truly believe they are living in the free world with democracy and liberty etc, while those Iranians and Russians are living in a totalitarian state with sham elections (again nobody questions why we are so chummy with Saudi Arabia whose citizens, especially women, enjoy significantly less freedoms than Iranian citizens)

Unfortunately with terror attacks in Western Europe by mainly Sunni Muslims, there is understandable considerable anti-Muslim sentiment and people will believe anything about a Muslim country when the propaganda outlets feed it to them. When it comes to Iran, ‘mad mullahs’ is a phrase you will hear often in the tabloid British press and the comments sections of mainstream papers. People actually seem to believe that if Iran gets nuclear weapons they will cartoonishly launch them all at Israel and be destroyed themselves by Israel’s Samson option.

That the Western public care so much about Israel also tells you a lot about the conditioning the media has done, they seem to be under the impression that Israel is still the fledgling Jewish state it was in 1948 that will wither away and die if not supported by the West, and of course they deserve pity because of what allegedly happened to European Jews 80 years ago, as such America had to pump billions of dollars into a first world country with fantastic infrastructure and a universal healthcare program to build up their armed forces, because they are an ‘island in a sea of hate’ (as the famous Hasbara line goes) surrounded by fanatical Muslims who want to instigate a second Shoah (with the first Shoah being some undetermined event).

I also hope that there are Iranians visiting this website and absorbing these details of this criminal psychopath’s role in this illegal and criminal political assassination. I agree with the comment by JVC.

For as long as these neocon criminals are able to commit these kinds of Mafia caliber assassinations and extend the tip of their evil Middle Fingers to both US Law and International Law and do these crimes with the idea that they can do so with complete impunity – these draft dodging, chickenhawk cowards will continue doing this kind of stuff. For as long as they feel like they are untouchable,
they will keep behaving in criminal and dishonorable ways.

BTW: I read an article by the fence straddling and totally inconsistent Judge Andrew Napolitano that I think appeared on http://www.lewrockwell.com’s website and in it, he was discussing the illegality of the killing of Soleimani. In that column, he went down the checklist in a very logical and legal fashion in order to prove his point and along the way, he pointed out that both Presidents Ford and Reagan signed laws that clearly prohibited political assassinations. These laws coincided with International laws that are also on the books.

Killing Soleimani, who had been invited to travel to Baghdad to participate in a peace agreement conference and the purpose of his mission was known by the White House prior to his arrival and subsequent murder and the PM of Iraq even admitted this to the mainstream media and said he had talked with Trump on the phone prior to this meeting – and then, Pompeo manages to goad Trump into killing the guy while he was under the supposedly good-will flag of Truce – that has to be one the biggest and most dishonorable and cowardly stunts that any American President has ever committed.

Soleimani was a highly respected warrior who actually faced the risk of death and he winds up being killed by a Vietnam war draft dodger who claimed he had bad feet and who is a guy who has probably never even won a fist fight in his entire life?

Life and this world sure seems to be screwed up these days.

I truly agree–beyond disgusting! US operates like a ruthless gangster–truly shameful and sickening.

‘It may be the beginning of a re-think and turning back to look again at diplomatic solutions.’

Alternatively, we have earned the hatred and contempt of seventy million people with a vicious act of treacherous murder, carried out under the pretense of conducting peace talks. It’s still possible to visit Iran; why don’t you go put an American flag tee-shirt, tour the country, and report back on your reception?

There’s also the minor detail that the act itself was morally loathsome and obviously carried out in the hopes of provoking an otherwise indefensible war of aggression. That’d be another way of looking at it.

But I guess for the new America, all that’s just fine.

“We live under a brutal form of Fascism that has no equivalent in human history. I pales in comparison with Nazi Germany. ”

It would be worthwhile to break down some relevant indicators and compare the current US situation with that in Germany in, say, 1935.

    Some people have attempted this.

One point worth making, though, is that Hitler was punctilious in following the law. If he wanted to do something, he made sure that a law was on the books that gave his government the legal facade to do what he wanted. Such as the persecution of the Jews (this was well before the Final Solution hove into sight). For example, Hitler was furious when SA “freelancers” conducted an impromptu pogrom in Gunzenhausen on March 25, 1934. He then made sure that there were laws on the books making it “legal” to persecute Jewish Germans.

    So, that was legitimized lawlessness.
What *we* have here in the USA in our top state officials is lawlessness without even the figleaf of a law of some kind. What law legalizes “deterrence” and assassination? On the contrary, laws on the books prohibit assassination. Who hands down the indictments for such crimes? Self-confessed. Trump and Pompeo have confessed to this crime. Who hands down an arrest warrant?

It wouldn’t surprise me if avengers targeted Pompeo first.

We are deep into the woods here.
We are far up s— creek without a paddle.
Can it be that Trump’s “advisors” such as Pompeo have driven him round the twist by convincing him that they are “normal” and so if he wants to be considered “normal” he must do what they say? Certainly the MSM seem to be applauding the abnormal by labeling it “normal,” yea, presidential. Such as the missile attacks in Syria.
Now suddenly they do a 180, and hang Trump out to dry, pinned to the line alongside Pompeo.

    Yeah: ‘a dream come true’
    But just a dream.
None of those people would be in one place at the same time. Maybe a couple, but not all.
Certainly not POTUS and the Veep.
    And certainly not outside US.

    {, a drone operated by China or Pakistan}

China would never do something that stupid.
    Neither would Pakistan.
In the case of China, assuming it did, US may not attack China directly, but there would be massive retaliation. Maybe giving Taiwan nukes, or to the Uygurs…….to use against Beijing. China needs US for its economic and technological advancement for a long time. And Chinese are very careful getting into a fight. They are not afraid to push back, but just enough.

In the case of Pakistan, the government wouldn’t do it, but some rogues in the military might, or some Islamist group with the help of their ISI. As far as I know Pakistan doesn’t have anything (i.e. nuke missiles) that can reach US, so US will nuke it at will. Or maybe encourage India to attack (….with US’s help). Pakistan disappearing as a state will have zero effect on US – economic or otherwise.

And US doesn’t care what happens that far away, even to its “allies” (…..nuked by Paks).
The only consideration for US would be the astronomical price of oil, in starting a conflagration in the region.

(Most) People of US are oblivious to the rest of the world, and that includes the leadership (with few exceptions). They haven’t seen on US homeland the massive devastation that war brings
So people here feel very secure, that is why they attack and invade at will: so far there has been no pain. Sorry, but the deaths of ~3,000 9/11 Americans is “cost of doing business” to these psychopath leaders. Not to mention the millions that have been killed in foreign lands as a result of US wars since WW2.

We have to ask ourselves: why were they bold enough or stupid enough to carry out the Soleimani murder? Because they were pretty sure there would be no serious consequences. So far there are none. So Iran assassinates someone high up in the future: then what? Everyone is expendable to The Empire. They couldn’t care less. If fact they’d welcome it: endless grist for the anti-Iranian demonizing mill.

Why is it that Kim Jong-un has not been assassinated? Because The Empire is pretty certain that even in his absence North Korean military will unleash Hell on South Korea and Japan. They are a cohesive, fearless people not afraid of war. US is not militarily vulnerable to NK, but the economic devastation and chaos may cause the collapse of US.

It is reported this morning (CNN) that Trump bragged about the killing to a crowd at a big fundraising dinner.

Prez Bone Spurs is such a tough guy. But his fellow yellow belly supporters eat this crap up.

Trump recounts minute-by-minute details of Soleimani strike to donors at Mar-a-Lago
    https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/18/politics/trump-soleimani-details-mar-a-lago/index.html

In his speech — held inside the gilded ballroom on his Mar-a-Lago property — he claimed that Soleimani was “saying bad things about our country” before the strike, which led to his decision to authorize his killing.
“How much of this shit do we have to listen to?” Trump asked. “How much are we going to listen to?”
Trump did not describe an “imminent threat” that led to his decision to kill Soleimani, the justification used by administration officials in the aftermath of the attack.
Instead, he described Soleimani as a “noted terrorist” who “was down on our list” and “was supposed to be in his country” before traveling to other nations in the region.
Trump described in detail watching remotely as Soleimani arrived at Baghdad International Airport, where he was met by Iraqi paramilitary leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the head of Kata’ib Hezbollah.

Trump claimed erroneously that Soleimani was meeting “the head of Hezbollah” (the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group is separate from group led by Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis).
And he claimed the strike he authorized took out “two for the price of one.”
He went on to recount listening to military officials as they watched the strike from “cameras that are miles in the sky.”
“They’re together sir,” Trump recalled the military officials saying. “Sir, they have two minutes and 11 seconds. No emotion. ‘2 minutes and 11 seconds to live, sir. They’re in the car, they’re in an armored vehicle. Sir, they have approximately one minute to live, sir. 30 seconds. 10, 9, 8 …’ ”
“Then all of a sudden, boom,” he went on. “‘They’re gone, sir. Cutting off.’ ”
“I said, where is this guy?” Trump continued. “That was the last I heard from him.”
Trump’s detailed recounting of the strike goes further than what he or other officials have said about the evening in early January that took out Iran’s top military and intelligence commander. The strike led to increased tensions in the region and fears the US and Iran could go to war.
Trump acknowledged the outcome Friday, saying the strike “shook up the world.”
“He was supposed to be invincible,” Trump said of Soleimani.
In his remarks, Trump also repeated claims that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died “screaming” following a US raid on his compound.
“He was screaming, going crazy,” Trump said. Other US officials have declined to provide further details of al-Baghdadi’s final minutes.
And Trump joked the Belgian Malinois dog that assisted in the Baghdadi raid “got more credit than I did” for the killing.
“The dog Conan became very famous,” Trump said.

There was no proof of Soleimani’s direct involvement in the attack on the embassy, which was a blowback reaction from the yankee killing of dozens of Iraqis in bases fighting ISIS thugs (whom convincing evidence indicates have had covert support from the US or US related sources. In fact, a day or two before the yankee hit on Soleimani, Soleimani had probably been involved in cooling the tensions and withdrawing from the embassy occupation.
The embassy itself is not an ordinary embassy but a fortress which stands as an element of reduced continuing occupation which resulted from the war on Iraq, which itself was an “aggressive war”, defined as a war crime by US prosecutor Robert Jackson at the Nuremberg trial.

Finally, I oppose the “resistance to Trump” based on the official democratic party, which lost its legitimacy propagating the phony Russia scare, and the fake impeachment based on demanding the truth about Biden’s corruption and democrat critiques on Trump for being not warlike enough based on phony stories about Russian collusion or attempting to pressure the Ukrainian regime which itself was a puppet regime installed by the deep state under Obama. I would obviously favour impeachment of Trump based on ordering an assassination of an important figure in a government contrary to international law and existing US laws.

Jewish lobby owned American traitor Rep Tom Cotton, goes after anti war Quincy Inst. with the usual anti-Semite slur.
Obviously some Jews are worried Quincy will have political impact on congress and eventually prevail over the Jewish pro war think tanks.

Why Is Tom Cotton Hurling the Charge of Anti-Semitism At the Quincy Institute?

Unable to hold his laughter upon hearing Cotton’s remarks, Andrew Bacevich, founding president of the Quincy Institute, responded, “The guy is a fool, obviously.”

The Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft is experiencing its first public dust-up.

On Wednesday, in remarks on the floor of the U.S. Senate, Tom Cotton (R-AR) accused the Quincy Institute of enabling antisemitism. The institute was founded one month ago.

“It [antisemitism] festers in Washington think tanks like the Quincy Institute, an isolationist blame America First money pit for so-called ‘scholars’ who’ve written that American foreign policy could be fixed if only it were rid of the malign influence of Jewish money.”

Cotton, a former U.S. Army Captain who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was personally groomed by arch-neoconservative and “NeverTrumper” Bill Kristol prior to his ascension to the U.S. Senate in 2014. Since his election, he has consistently been one of the most hawkish members of the Senate.

Quincy’s mission statement is to promote “ideas that move U.S. foreign policy away from endless war and toward vigorous diplomacy in the pursuit of international peace.” To that end, it has been critical of the Trump administration’s decision to assassinate Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani in an apparent act of war.

Andrew Bacevich, a former U.S. Army Colonel who served in Vietnam and the Gulf War, is the founding president of the Quincy Institute. Yesterday, following an event promoting his book, The Age of Illusions: How America Squandered Its Cold War Victory, he spoke to the National Interest about Cotton’s accusations and Suleimani’s death.

Unable to hold his laughter upon hearing Cotton’s remarks, Bacevich responded, “Well it’s absurd. Nobody in the Quincy Institute has ever made any statement remotely like that. It’s just absurd. It doesn’t deserve a response, really. The guy is a fool, obviously.”

I don’t care about what he said,” Bacevich continued. “But I think we are encouraged that the Quincy Institute is getting as much attention as it has. That’s what we’re trying to do, and I think we’re off to a good start. I also think we have a hell of a long way to go before we bring about the kind of change, we aspire to bring about.”

The administration has waved away questions about its claim that Suleimani represented an “imminent threat” who was about to execute an attack that could lead to possibly hundreds of American casualties in the Middle East. “Jesus, do we have to explain why we do these things,” an exasperated senior State Department official said in a press briefing when asked about the veracity of the threat.

Bacevich sees it differently. “We have no idea if any such intelligence existed,” insisted Bacevich on why it’s important to ask these kinds of questions. “We shouldn’t trust any administration, especially on matters related to the use of force. Any administration needs to provide a persuasive case for why it’s necessary to kill somebody or bomb some target.”

The militia leader killed with Soleimani, along with the one killed in a second drone strike (really memory-holed), were the organizers of the embassy assault.

Moreover, the American embassy is in the fortified Green Zone. What would you have thought if you were Trump? Particularly since that not so supreme leader Khemenei was taunted Trump with “You can’t do a damn thing,” Democrat Senator Murphy declared the POTUS to be “impotent” in the face of Iranian provocations since the summer, and Democrats generally started chortling with delight about another “Benghazi” under Trump’s watch.

There was no proof of Soleimani’s direct involvement in the attack on the embassy . . .

Well, the POTUS wasn’t looking to try him in an American court. apparently.

You don’t seriously believe Soleimani flew into Bagdad in the middle of the night, right after the embassy assault, to meet with the militia leaders behind the operation, without nefarious intent, do you? If so, then contra his reputation he was none too bright.

The Iranians have been closely collaborating with the Democrats as a part of The Resistance. A “Benghazi,” along with a follow-on hostage crisis running right up until Election Day 2020, would have been a game-changer in their so far multiple failed gambits to destroy and remove Trump from office.

    Nonsense.

Even MSM is reporting that the plans to murder Soleimani were “on the books” for a very long time. US (and/or Israel) were sitting and watching, waiting for an opportunity, which unfortunately Soleimani gifted them.

I have read a few comments on Soleimani related threads @unz and a bunch of (presumably) MAGA posters are singing the same tune: “Harrumph, harrumph,….Iranians shouldn’t have goaded OUR president. their own fault……”

Here are some of the personal insults Kim Jong Un has hurled at Trump since he got elected:

    – ‘Mentally deranged U.S. dotard’
    -‘Obviously a madman’
    -“a frightened dog”
-“gangster fond of playing with fire”
    -“A frightened dog barks louder.”

So how is it that after all those personal insults, Emperor Trump goes and meets Kim and it’s all lovey-dovey between the two?

    Soleimani was murdered because:
    1. He was the lead organizing brains of the ground forces of IRGC and Hezbollah in the historic defeat of The Empire and its ISIS stormtroopers in Syria ( …with RuAF and SAA, of course).
    2. He was the lead organizing brain of the defeat of ISIS in Iraq. If you guys remembers, US-trained Iraqi army ran – ran – in the presence of ISIS, leaving behind all the expensive hardware they had bought from US, and giving it to ISIS.
    3. This is a conjecture on my part: Soleimani was no doubt working with Iraq’s Shia on a long term strategy to eject US troops from Iraq.

Interesting title for the article. In the leadup to WW II, FDR started interjecting and critzing Hitler and his government. In one of FDR’s speeches he referred to Hitler, and or his government as “gangsters” I believe, or something similar. Hitler responded in a speech and said that Germany was a land of work and they did not have “gangsters” such as the US was [in]famous for, places like Chicago and people like Al Capone and the long list of others, In fact, I think that statement covers all or most of Europe It never had a Chicago or characters quite like Capone. Another interesting fact. Historian David Irving says Hitler fotrbade any assassinations of foreign leaders, while I have always read American writers/authors writing about assassinating Hitler. David Irving also said that if Germany had won the war, Hitler planned to let his main enemy Stalin to live and continue as a leader somewhere far off so he could continue his “social experiments” there.

I think “gangland-style hit” is an appropriate characterization of what the US did.. I think Israel is the only other country that carries out similar assasinations, but they assassinate Iranan scientists or other people too, people that have nothing to do with governing the country. These are despicable acts, especially by governments claiming to be fighting “terrorism”. I would assume it violates international law and is illegal as anything a terrorist does. It is certainly an act of war. With the extreme popularity of Soleimani, I don’t think Trump murdering him will be forgotten for many years. If I was Iran and the situation changed and the USA was no longer the bully in the world, I would probably consider avenging Soleimani’s murder to make a point. Maybe Trumo will be the target. So Iranian militias just accidentally get sucked into power in these other Middle Eastern regions because the USA did a boo-boo? Iran didn’t want anything to do with things, they were minding their own business and their militias get swept away into Iraq. Darn it. Hate it when that happens.

Come on. Iran is engaging in military operations and conquest of its neighbors, attempting to increase power and restore a great Persian/Islamic empire. And what was the reported reason for the “embassy assault”? — how many Americans were killed or injured during the “embassy assault” vs non-Americans during the alleged reason for it?

I wasn’t ignoring this incident. I was concisely explaining why the POTUS ordered the drone strikes on Soleimani and his allied militia leaders after the embassy assault.

Indeed, I agree with at least the implication of your comment in that this earlier strike on the only Iraq/Syria border crossing controlled by Iranian proxies, purportedly in retaliation for killing an “American contractor,” constituted the first escalation from the American side that we’re aware of.

Trump had very publicly declined to respond to earlier repeated Iranian provocations with deadly retaliation. Most prominently after Iran shot down the expensive US drone. We don’t know what changed, or even whether this strike was authorized below Trump as a purported commander-level “defensive” action.

But what we do know is that Trump, the most transparent POTUS ever, was never asked by a media out to destroy him to explain the strike that killed 25 Iraqis, a clear abandonment of his proportionality principle. They and Democrats didn’t because they had nothing to gain and everything to lose by drawing attention to those details.

The embassy assault which followed, was coincident with a coordinated (Iran; Democrats; and their allied media) campaign presenting Trump as “impotent,” and that he “couldn’t do a damn thing” to protect American personnel. In other words, Jimmy Carter.

If you noodle what I’m saying just a little bit harder, you will see that I’m not at all foreclosing the possibility that Soleimani was, in effect, set up.

After all, it remains completely inexplicable why he travelled outside of Iran; and to Iraq at that moment; and was riding in a car with that militia leader in the middle of the night in Bagdad. Is it so difficult to see this from Trump’s perspective in real-time?

In their book, Hubris, David Corn and Michael Isikoff recount a 2002 CIA plan to help Iraqi exiles take over an Iraqi air base and thus, in the words of one of the plan’s authors, “create an incident in which Saddam lashes out” so “you’d have a premise for war.” https://www.theatlantic.com…

The end of the Vietnam war resulted in crushing economic sanctions, an out of control pathocracy in next door Cambodia that left 1/5 of that nations population dead until Vietnam stepped ina nd stopped it, domestically got a rampaging cancer and birth defect epidemic from the billions of gallons of Agent Orange sprayed on civilians, foes and US soldiers alike, an infrastructure that was blown to dust, remember, the US dropped more bombs on Vietnam than were dropped doing all of WWII and all of it was based on a blatant lie.

It also left Vietnam with millions of unexplored bombs, landmines and chemical WMDs dumped or buried everywhere the US went. All if of it just waiting to blow up children, adults, pets and farm animals if they happen to walk past or across them.

Politically, the onslaught of the US sanctions program forced the Viet-Kong to keep seeking help from the USSR and China to prevent an even greater starvation crisis thus ensuring that it would remain a communist oppressive regime.

But now in the 21st century, it has found a new life as a US style colony in which children and adults slave away for 14 hours in sweatshop factories for mere pocket change to produce your $500 nike sport shoes, your $200 jeans and your $1000 gucci handbags.

Exactly .. And I hope Porky Pompass does face either losing his job or facing the consequences for pressuring DJT into ordering the assassination of IRGC Commander Qassem Soleimani, who was on a peace mission when he was assassinated. This act violated both US and International laws.

  180. A superpower ceases to be a superpower when it can longer command obedience. Then what it does is wreck or destroy situations or people that it can no longer control. Chaos becomes the means through which it expresses its impotence and, within a decade, irrelevance.

Legal opinions strongly suggest that Iran has a winnable case at the ICC and at the Hague. Regardless, Pomparse has been the tip of the spear. Chronology strongly suggests that Trump had a fait accompli thrown in his lap. He had to expect that, however, because he gave Pomparse his red-line “Dead American” long ago. That was created by a FF attack in late December.

A corrupt MIC has led America to a situation where its bases cannot be protected from Missile attacks. It is historic that Iran used older missiles, that they hit the targets and that the US had no response. Impotence. American troops are sitting ducks in their bases. Many will now leave service. The same occurred with the US Navy and its carriers several years ago.
Trump has shown who he really is. He serves the State not America. I will repeat a prediction I made a month ago. Trump is the Great Betrayer who will completely and utterly betray his base. He is a faux Christian. No Christian would be party to the assassination of a foreign military figure who was party to peace talks. The blatant post-assassination babble of Trump is pathetic and ineffective; Soleimani was a ‘terrorist’ who had murdered ‘thousands’ and was involved in 911. Everything Trump, Pomparse and the neo-con/cohens have said is laughable. These people have exposed themselves, to everyone with a brain who can think, as absolute, immoral filth; worse than street thugs.
It speaks volumes about American culture that Trump is still electable.

Not sure if this is correct but I came across something that suggested Pomparse may have wanted a Senate seat and Trump wouldn’t support him. I would be interested if anyone has information about that. I can see personal animosity playing into this latest round of insanity and hubris oozing from Imperial DC.

I agree with the overall picture you paint.
The role of individuals, and the networks they stem from, must be taken into account. Bush1 for example, was the first offender in offering soothing reassurances to Russia re: NATO then betraying them. Clinton and Bush2 followed his lead. Both presidents were proteges of Bush1. Also, let’s not forget the rest of the crowd of neo-con/cohen gangsters around these presidents since Reagan.
There is a network behind these people. That is where the ultimate power lies in America. Bush1 wielded a lot of power but in the end I think he was a servant of something much bigger just like his father Prescott (who aided in building the Nazi war machine).

Now, unfortunately, they will see that this behaviour actually has a level of support. That is very sad. That Americans would defend such shameful conduct amazes me. The 1980 Iranian Hostage Crisis was instigated by Bush1 via the C_A. They arranged for the transfer of power from the Shah to a usefull boogie man, Khomeini, who was flown in from France. It destroyed Carter’s election chances. It was one of the most blatant acts of political fraud, up to to that point in time. Iran went from ally to enemy, officially, and was soon at war with US proxy, Iraq, who was later demonized (after he tried to sell oil in Euros), invaded and murdered. That is how the US treats its ‘allies’. It uses them and then betrays them. The US is incapable of honouring any agreement because it has no honour or integrity. This is what happens when Jews run your foreign policy. You end up with scum like Kissinger, a war criminal, destroying your international reputation to serve Zionism.

The United States talked (self-proclaimed) itself up so much, to such a grotesque and tasteless level of mythology, that it completely lost connection to the realty in which she is not the largest economy, not that good militarily (politely speaking) and, in general is not such a super superpower. Iran’s strikes on US bases in Iraq is just the last indication to what a degree the United States is paralyzed politically, economically and militarily. Same goes for Turkey buying S-400s and so on.

Now that the U.S. has declared that the new deterrence policy it used on Soleimani also applies to Russia and China, the State Department’s latest olive branch has me worried: “Dear Honorable Mr. Lavrov, Secretary of State “Majic” Mike Pompeo cordially invites you to a dockside dinner-to-end-all-dinners featuring musical compositions of Rachmaninoff-you, a killer main course of Solyanka, and after dinner Vodka concoctions that are simply to-die-for. There are even more festivities in store but rather than drone on about it all–as we say in D.C. “Be there or be nowhere!”

It is the art of skimming profits from the labor of other productive people. It is great preparation for a career in politics

I dunno. Pompeo just doesn’t profile as an end-times looney. Grew up in upper middle class Orange County, and played on the basketball team. First in his class at West Point, on the Law Review at Harvard Law. Plugged in to the Koch bros and MIC to get his start in the aerospace industry. Has moved among Washington movers and shakers ever since.

Maybe he professes a strong Christian faith, but this does not strike me as someone waiting for the Rapture. But, as with the entire Trump presidency, I really just don’t know what I’m looking at. Maybe they are just completely incoherent ideologically, and react to events off the cuff.

Twenty-eight percent? Not unless “IRAN” was written on the space in boldfaced, 32-point letters. Then maybe. Otherwise, not even one percent.
