‘White farmers are being brutally killed in South Africa’ warned President Donald this week amid all the uproar and craziness over tariffs, world trade and kickoff of a campaign to force Big Pharma to lower its prices to consumers.
Why would Trump target South Africa? First, because South Africa dared accuse Israel’s far right government of genocide and war crimes in its savage repression of Gaza’s Palestinians. An estimated 55,000 Palestinians, the majority women and children, have been killed by Israel in Gaza. Another estimated 2,500 Palestinians are believed to have died in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and some 2,000 or more dead remain under the ruins of destroyed apartment buildings in Gaza.
The Trump Administration is very close to Israel’s hard right-wing government. So far, Trump has followed and defended Israel’s repression and slaughter in Gaza. It’s often hard to tell if the American dog is wagging the Israeli tail or vice versa.
Trump’s government has repeatedly lashed out at South Africa for accusing Israel of genocide and war crimes. Trump and his MAGA backers are well known for their negative feelings about blacks in general and have made efforts to eradicate often deep black influence in US society. Bringing in whites from South Africa is a novel way of lessening America’s infatuation with all things black under the Biden administration.
As a native New Yorker, I well recall the attempts by past Democratic governments to flood the city with immigrants who would inevitably vote Democratic. The Biden administration tried the same strategy to secure black votes for the Democrats. Vast welfare schemes were set up to cater to black and colored voters. Many of these schemes are now being dismantled by the Trump hit squad. Meanwhile, the Trump White House is busy trying to import more Hindu Indians to replace Muslims who are increasingly unwelcome these days in Maga USA.
In fact, I sympathize with the plight of white South African farmers. I spent much time while in South Africa with white farmers, known as Boers. They were very much like the Homesteaders of the American West: tough, rough and ready, God-fearing and straight shooters.
Many Boer families had been in South Africa’s Natal Province and Orange Free State since the 1600’s, much longer than black Zulu or Xhosa tribes. They are the real South Africans. I called them and white Rhodesians ‘the lost white tribes of Africa.’ America would benefit from offering them new homes. But they deserve to keep their homes in South Africa and Rhodesia (today Zimbabwe).
I recall visiting isolated Boer farmers in the Transvaal, with the South African army mixed race units. We visited farmhouses that had held off attacks by African Congress guerillas. Some were burned and their white occupants murdered. Whites had begun to flee South Africa. So, Trump is right to offer them asylum. But what about Palestinians?

Interestingly, it seems that when the Boers arrived on the Cape, they met with the Khoisan about land on which they could farm. The Khoisan gave them the land that was of no use to them, the farmland. About 20 years ago, the then Khoisan King stated that the Boers gave them the concept of land ownership. @ Eric Margolis, I am an Indian South African Muslim who is a ardent reader of yours and UNZ review for more than 10 years now. I live in Brakpan in the East Rand of South Africa. My current neighbours are both white afrikaaner and black african. My sister adopted a white afrikaans baby and my extended family is coloured or mix race. I have friends and family of all races and religions and I can tell you from first hand experience, Elon Musk and Trump are dead wrong about the persecution or attacking of White Afrikaaners in South Africa. I have family members who own farms and by far, farmers are the least in danger of the crazy and brutal amount of violent crime in my country. If you live in the cities there is like a 50X chance of you experiencing crime and if you are black african that lives in the former townships your chance of being a victim of crime is like 200X higher than being white. We have 28000 plus murders a year and around 95% plus of these are black victims and most of these around 80% of them are due to drunkedness and disagreements between known persons of the victim. These are our annual crime statistics. BUt, with that being said, farmers are occasionally murdered and most of the time its own farm workers who kill thier bosses as thier bosses still treat them poorly adn dont honour agreements or pay wages etc adn there is an ultra small minority where you may have a roving group of bandits which find opputunity targets. The Khoisan and Bushmen are the original inhabitants, but the Afrikaaners only came to south africa starting in the 1650s and the Nguni tribes which make up the Zulu and the Xhosa and others arrived here in South Africa from around 200 AD to around 1000AD , so Eric Margolis is incorrect when he states in the article above that the Afrikaaners are here before the Zulu and Xhosa – he has gotten basic history wrong and he needs to correct this factual error of his.
Aslo, in the latest statistics and history of my country, Afrkaans was first written down by the Malay, Indonesian, Arab and Indian slaves of the Dutch settlers and thhe first book written in afrikaans, but in the Arabic Script using Afrikaans words was the Quran and Muslims Books of Hadiths in the 1700s/ Afrikaans was formally only recoginise as a new language 100 years ago on the 9-10 May 1925 and this past week white afrikaaners were celebrating this fact. Last week Thursday, I have these whatsapp security groups and 3 afrikaaner men refused to converse in English as per the whatsapp rules of the group, so I allowed the non afrikaaners to speak to Isizulu, IsiXhosa and Sestho – mind you this group has 350 people on it and the only ones being racist were the white afrikaaners as they left and formed their own group – good luck with taking in people that only complain and cannot work in diverse setttings and only want to deal with people that look, eat and talk like them – have fun.

Agreed, Afrikaans was first written in Arabic by Muslim slaves in the Cape. Afrikaans as a language first started when the Dutch arrived at the Cape. The slaves couldn’t speak high Dutch so simplified matters into a sort of pidgin creole Dutch called Afrikaans, even the Dutch sailors started corrupting the Dutch language to be able to communicate with people in the Dutch colonies of Malaysia, Indonesia and so on. Was shocked to hear a Chinese person from Singapore using what I consider to be an Afrikaans word recently, wanted to give the guy a hug as he was speaking the taal (language).
Even the first Afrikaner was not white. It was a term first used by the bastard coloured people in the Cape in the late 1600’s to describe themselves as they were not pure Dutch as they had the blood of Africa, Khoisan, in them as well. Afrikaner and Afrika was a common coloured surname in those days. Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the Dutch Cape Colony, was born to a mixed race Malaysian mother and a Dutch father, so there was lots of mixing going on in those days, with both bloodlines and languages. The Afrikaner cattle breed which the white Afrikaners used on their Groot Trek into the interior was just the Khoisan’s cattle. Today’s Afrikaans language has been heavily cleaned up to remove as much of the non white influence as possible.
When the Dutch arrived in the Cape where were no blacks there, just Khoisan. Some land was sold to the Dutch, but most of the land was taken with firearms from the KhoiSan, as recorded in the diaries of the Dutch in the Cape at that time. The first black tribes were encountered like 1000 km’s from Cape Town. It was only in the early 1800’s with the rise of the Zulu nation that the white Afrikaners could move into the Free State and Transvaal. The Zulus wiped out so many people in the Free State and Transvaal that the whites could move in there. The whites couldn’t move eastwards as there were too many Xhosa there, but the interior was nicely depopulated.
And then of course the conservative God fearing white people in the interior got too clever and went and passed the Apartheid laws which totally messed things up in Cape Town. Never let religious country bumpkins who talk to God dictate to city dwellers, no good can come out of it. Blacks are not indigenous to South Africa, all the blacks migrated down from Nigeria. So why the blacks want to chase whites out of South Africa is madness, whites have as much right as blacks to be in South Africa. Blacks are just not nice people.

I do agree with you that the strategic value of South Africa is absolutely, not first class. It was, as you correctly pointed out about ocean lanes sea choke points, then it was all about diamonds and gold, then the cold war came about and it was about strategic second tier rare earth metals, but once the soviet union fell, and the nationalists figured it out, that the ANC and PAC branches supported by the communists had no legs to stand on, it was at this point that they threw in the towel.
With regards to cape town, there are a lot of other nice places as well in my shitty south africa, awesome places where things do still work properly, but south africa is not an easy place to live in.
A good few xamples and the KZN north coast, parts of Mpumalagna and Limpopo, lots of parts of the Eastern and Northern Cape, and the value for money that you get here. I mean you can get a 1000 square meter house, on a 5 hectare plot with off grid power and back up water tanks in these places for like R10 million which is like 500K USD. We are dirt cheap in property – so if all you guys want to retire here, please come – its awesome and your dollars, pounds and Euros will go very fat indeed and we all speak English, even the crazy afriikaaners also speak it.
Because its so hard to live here, the soft and social skills that us south africans bring to the 1st world countries makes us, the skilled and educated south africans a very high commodity. I have Indian muslim family members who all emigrated to New Zealand, Australia, US, Canada and UK, becuase they were poached and given a salary and career opportunities that was simply too good to turn down – like in the ranges of more than 300K USD per annum and so many other perks – they are all highly skilled and experienced – but they could only get that stuff here in South Africa .
