The Wheel Turns, Ages Come and Go, And Thus Dies the Russian Reaction
It was never my mission to pursue "activist" goals so much as to try to accurately understand and explain how the world works, and at best, play some modest role in informing the debate in those areas that I hoped could make use of some of my insights. From that perspective, my record of my... Read More
Here’s a new Open Thread for all of you. To minimize the load, please continue to limit your Tweets or place them under a MORE tag. Meanwhile, I'd also recommend a couple of my recent columns about aspects of the current Presidential campaigns of Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Donald Trump, Eugene Debs,... Read More
The previous Open Thread is approaching 1,000 comments and getting a little sluggish, so here's a new one. I'm embedding the videos of the recent Scott Ritter/Ray McGovern discussion as well as the Munk Debate featuring John Mearsheimer. ---Ron Unz
Discussion continues at the next Open Thread. Please note that I am no longer involved in any capacity with this blog, which is henceforth known as the Russian Reaction Community. It will presumably be maintained at The Unz Review for as long as demand for it exists. As I mentioned before, all my "serious" commentary... Read More
Like it or not, but shock and disbelief is inevitable.
The last Open Thread is getting very sluggish, so here's another one. Again, please use the MORE Tag to hide all but your first Tweet and otherwise keep the thread load manageable as long as possible. --- Ron Unz
The previous Open Thread focused on the Russia-Ukraine war has nearly reached 800 comments, and the large volume of Tweets and other embedded material has led to complaints of sluggishness, so I'm opening this new thread. In order to minimize such problems in the future, it's probably a good idea to use the MORE tag... Read More
Russia has just recognized the LNR and DNR, the logical culmination of Russia's "Nationalist Turn" that identified as having been initiated under Putin by the late 2010s, as well as shorter-term predictions. As things stand now, we have: We have Putin openly calling Ukraine a Bolshevik-created fake state to universal Western shock and disbelief, openly... Read More
The previous thread had become very sluggish and the Russia/Ukraine situation led Anatoly to publish his first new Substack column in several months: So here's a new Open Thread for the Karlin commenting commenting, with a few of the Russia/Ukraine comments relocated here from the end of the previous one. --- Ron Unz
Here’s a new Open Thread for the Karlin commenting community. — Ron Unz
Here’s a new Open Thread for the Karlin commenting community, jump started with a relocated comment from the previous thread. — Ron Unz
As a New Year's present, here's a new Open Thread for the Karlin commenting community, jump started with a few relocated comments from the previous thread. --- Ron Unz
Here's another Open Thread for the Karlin commenting community since the previous one has gotten very long and sluggish to load, jump starting it by moving a couple of the previous comments. — Ron Unz
The previous Open Thread had passed 1,000 comments and was getting very sluggish to load. Since Anatoly is apparently very busy working on crypto-currency projects, I've gone ahead and opened this new one for his commenter-community, moving a few of the last comments over to it. --- Ron Unz
There's apparently popular demand for a new Open Thread so here you go! Though I probably won't be checking up on the comments here much. I needed to recharge the past month. But I'll start writing much more frequently on the Substack from next Friday on.
This is presumably my last Open Thread on Russian Reaction (posted on on A123's request). As I said in the previous thread, after 7 years of blogging, I will be leaving The Unz Review. Though my original intention was to focus on other, non-blogging related projects, there was such a large outpouring of demand for... Read More
* In his latest newsletter, Adam Tooze points out that the Chinese government is asserting greater state control over the economy, including the power of Chinese business magnates to "cash out" of their holdings. In retrospect, this is perhaps the most logical explanation for the crypto crackdown. * Diana Fleischman has a good article in... Read More
How Putin Created the Russian National State
For the first time in more than a century, the Russians have a state that they can call their own, a state run by and for the Russian people - the hallowed "Russian National State" (RNS) that has been the holy grail of Russian nationalism in the post-Soviet era. At first glance, this seems like... Read More
I have been a long-term China bull since I began blogging. Proof (2008). A lot of what the Western media was writing about China were based on Sinophobic fantasies that had no correlation with reality. Just to be clear, I am still a China bull, at least in the sense that I'm sure its GDP... Read More
🇷🇺💪🇮🇳 * As usual, "real result" of United Russia would have been around 35% instead of 50% (and a simple majority instead of a Constitutional majority). But Western criticisms much less effective in the wake of analogous - if statistically implausible - claims about the 2020 US elections. * EVERGRANDE. I was a China bull... Read More
There's not much point worrying much over geological existential risks. They come too infrequently too be a major risk, and those that do occur more often, are not big enough to matter in the big picture. Still, if there's one risk that is both potentially highly destructive and occurs at a relatively high rate, it... Read More
For the past two days I have been awoken by loudspeakers in my neighborhood playing Soviet-themed music telling me to go vote in the elections in a radio announcer type voice. Here are the wealth of choices I have on offer in my district: Elena Gulnicheva, commie QT endorsed by Navalny's "Smart Vote". Incidentally, it... Read More

Reproductively successful cultures are insular from the global culture. * Scott Alexander: Book Review: Modi - A Political Biography * AFGHANISTAN. Since the end of the Bush era, disinvitations and cancelation campaigns have become the near exclusive preserve of the Left, with the range of opinion warranting such attacks spreading beyond the traditionally taboo HBD/IQ nexus to encompass more and more areas, such as affirming the existence of physiological differences between the sexes. According to a... Read More
mal comments on a post from last year: Well, there’s nothing wrong with current Russian commercial space program such – they are launching OneWeb satellites now and there’s a Korean one thats supposed to go on Angara. SpaceX does have more launches but thats because they launch their own Starlink constellation and Russian Sphere is... Read More
Charles Murray was widely lambasted a few weeks back for this Tweet: Indeed, Sub-Saharan Africa isn't that bad according to official homicide stats. For instance, Burkina Faso and Benin claim 1.3 and 1.1 /100,000 homicides, respectively, per year (from UN Office on Drugs and Crime's International Homicide Statistics via World Bank). But Africa is a... Read More
Matt Yglesias might want a billion Americans. But there would have been 500 million Russians in the absence of the Bolshevik Revolution, as was predicted by Dmitry Mendeleev in a 1907 book. Putin, who it is now very clear reads my blog and Twitter, recently said as much himself in a meeting with schoolchildren in... Read More
I was at the Army-2011 expo this week. Very cool, sort of like a military-themed Geek Picnic. *** * POWERFUL COMMENT. "Afghanistan as a country where the costs of central governance exceed local... Read More
Since the start of this year, the Ukraine has mounted an accelerating campaign to shut down all "pro-Russia" (apostrophes because more often than not they're not so much explicitly pro-Russian, as merely less anti-Russian and more oppositionist than the mainstream) media. Examples include: This February saw the shutdown of three TV channels (112 Ukraine, NewsOne... Read More
Politics is tribal. "Conservatism" is situational. And so you can get some "unlikely comic book crossovers" if looking at the world through country-specific ideological prisms. According to one recent poll, the most pro-vax Russians are United Russia (i.e. the most pro-Putin) voters, presumably reflecting the official state position which is and has always been pro-vaxx.... *** AFGHANISTAN * The terrorist attacks today. The Taliban did free all those Islamist militants, not all of them would have been strictly suborned to the Taliban themselves. What's so surprising? * Notable foreign relations developments. Tajikistan has adopted a cold tone to the Taliban, accusing them of gong and has reportedly supplied the NRF... Read More

The past is the best guide to the future, so there's no surprise that there is already a rebellion breaking out against the Taliban. Finding its core in the natural fastness of the Panjshir Valley, which foiled repeated Soviet attacks during the 1980s, the Northern Alliance is reconstituting itself under Ahmad Massoud (the son of... It is true that Afghans probably have the highest "Islamism Quotient" in the world. Support for sharia, as Steve Sailer reminds us, is basically universal. He refers to a 2013 PEW poll, which Razib Khan and I had covered a few years back. Furthermore, 79% of Afghans who support sharia also support the death penalty... Read More
First thought is that the US spent 20 years and $2 trillion trying to build a democracy in a half-literate country of goatherders that disintegrated within 20 days. Think what you could have done with that (dependent on your preferences). "Green New Deal". Free college. 335 ship Navy. Mars base. This adventure must have set... Read More
Like them, hate them, or consider them genderfluid TikToking herbivores, but one thing the zoomers undoubtedly get right is that they know the value of their labor and aren't afraid to spell out their conditions to seething boomers. Isn't this, like, the free market at work? Why would a supposed "libertarian" have a problem with... Read More
I mentioned this Ipsos poll on global attitudes to LGBT in a previous Open Thread, but it really deserves a separate post on account of its significance. I think it demonstrates three things: LGBT rights (as in marriage and adoption) have become universalized beyond their Western core, with the Rest sliding into line soon after... Read More
*** * Emil Kirkegaard: The ‘Hereditarians bad people’ objection. On the recent spat between Cathy Young vs. Charles Murray, Steve Sailer, and other hereditarians. These are the results of a recent poll from Rating Group. 41% agree with Putin's position, 55% disagree. Not bad, considering there's now been a generation's worth of state svidomy narratives. But possibly the most startling result (and certainly one that I didn't expect is there there's essentially zero difference across age groups. 44% of... Read More
Chinese protectionism/censorship (they only allow 34 Hollywood movies a year) has helped incubate a domestic film industry. As Richard Hanania points out, citing a study by James McMahon, that as of now, 9 out of 10 of the highest grossing films in Chinese history are domestic, all released in the last few years. Something like... Read More
Time for something more stereotypical. *** * The AK. About a couple of months ago the National Bolsheviks ("Other Russia") had me round to their "bunker" for a podcast. America's ability to draw high quality human capital from abroad is one of the lynchpins of its economic strengths and probably goes some ways to explaining why it's GDP per capita is significantly higher than would might be predicted from its national IQ. That's what I counselled people hoping for (or fearing) that a color revolution was imminent a few months ago: Look at the numbers. Well, since then, they have if anything plummeted further. 14% approval vs. 62% disapproval. Down from half a year ago. Furthermore, while young people are relatively more pro-Navalny (this is not surprising:... Read More
I wrote about Woke Capital making inroads into Russia after Netherlands HQ'ed Yandex.Taxi fired a driver who refused service to a rude Black foreign student last year. This translates to a homicide rate of 7.4/100,000 homicide rate using the US population of 332M as the denominator. I wrote about the history of the Russian homicide rates here. Yesterday the Levada Center released a new poll on vaccines that tends to confirm my contention that Russia's tawdry pace of vaccinations is not a result of supply constraints, but the banal fact that many Russians (including in older age groups) would simply rather catch Corona than get vaccinated. The first observation is that the... Read More

About Anatoly Karlin

I am a blogger, thinker, and businessman in the SF Bay Area. I’m originally from Russia, spent many years in Britain, and studied at U.C. Berkeley.

One of my tenets is that ideologies tend to suck. As such, I hesitate about attaching labels to myself. That said, if it’s really necessary, I suppose “liberal-conservative neoreactionary” would be close enough.

Though I consider myself part of the Orthodox Church, my philosophy and spiritual views are more influenced by digital physics, Gnosticism, and Russian cosmism than anything specifically Judeo-Christian.
