Religions answer questions that cannot be answered by observation and reason/logic/induction/etc. For example, there is the question of whether we should treat other people as objects of love and respect, or as resources to be harvested as ruthlessly as John Barleycorn [1, 1a]?

If there is no societally enforceable answer to these questions, then there will be no agreement on these questions. That leaves immediate short term advantage as a possible criterion for action by society members. Typically, atheists [2] are left with only short term advantage as a criterion for action. Some religions are also predatory on non-believers/non-members. I’ll just mention Unitarians (in my experience) and leave it at that; there are several other examples.

If there is no agreement on these questions, then the society will be locked in stasis in the context of Greek political theory, [3] to a civil war that prevents the society from adapting to external conditions. Stasis in the US is, IMHO, responsible for the stagnation of the US since the end of WW II (~1945).

The Obama/Biden/Harris chain of power shows that US stasis could persist if the Left persists in fragmenting and fighting after every one of its victories. Stasis eventually failed the Greeks when they were outmatched by (first) the Diadochi, and (later) formally incorporated into the Roman Empire.

If you want historical parallels, the US could be outmatched by the PRC as the suzerain for the BRICS+, then incorporated into the Russian Federation, after it incorporated the EU. This seems unlikely now, but is still a possibility.

So Atheism isn’t exactly the entire problem. It didn’t occur to me that maybe we grew up in different eras. I went to public school in the 6o’s and high school in the 70’s. If you are a generation or two younger than me I might understand your take because gender and sex confusion were already making radical inroads especially in the school system.

When we grew up we weren’t sexualized. Boys were boys, grew into teens and then became men. How you read this as me being obsessed with ‘little boys’ can only be found in your own psyche. This creates a productive economy where people need to do something for the community, that their neighbors choose, before they can spend it on housing. The mortgage–if it was owned by the community and not the banks–is the heart of the economy. It should incur a debt to live in a house others built, who taught you and fed you, in a town whose infrastructure was set up by others. We need to repay the previous generation by enabling them to live out their lives in security and dignity, and pass the gift on to the next generation–whether we have kids or not.
