Padraig Martin & Rick Dirtwater (ed.), The Honorable Cause: A Free South, self-published, 2023, 301 pages, $15.99 paperback, $3.49 electronic
This newly published defense of Southern Nationalism has quickly risen to become a bestseller in Amazon’s “nationalism” category. Symptomatic of the times we live in, eight of the 12 contributors have chosen to write under a pseudonym.
Co-editor Padraig Martin explains that the idea for this volume came to him in jail. The one-time conventional conservative attended the Charlottesville Unite the Right rally in August, 2017, wrongly assuming it would be an unproblematic exercise of his constitutional rights of peaceable assembly. But he operates four businesses, and Merrick Garland’s DOJ quickly found a pretext for jailing him for some paperwork violation from years ago. He was given the maximum possible sentence of six months in a federal pen followed by four months’ house arrest, three years’ probation and a $400 fine.
As he explains in the introduction, he used his prison time to put himself through a kind of graduate program in “revolutions, rebellions, and insurgencies,” intensively studying the history of Irish nationalism and radical Islam, as well as various Marxist movements. His reading convinced him that “the United States government is making every classic mistake of a country about to implode.”
The expansion of the police state, the exploitation of media mechanisms to suppress unflattering or contradictory information, the overreaction to dissent, and the targeting of the popular genetic majority through weaponizing minority grievances has always led to a country’s collapse. The only thing we [secessionists] lack . . . is a collapse in democratic trust. As long as Americans trusted that their vote mattered, we had an uphill battle.
But now the “irregularities” of the 2020 presidential election, continued Democratic party opposition to voter ID laws, and the brazen importation of an army of foreign clients across the Southern border are rapidly eroding democratic trust. The overreaction to the election integrity protest of January 6, 2021, is teaching ordinary Trump voters that they are viewed as no different from the “racists” whose suppression they formerly either ignored or applauded. According to Mr. Martin, “there has never been a country that survived the impulsive suppression actions of a reactive government.”
Southern Nationalism is one program for building a better future following a collapse. Mr. Martin defines such nationalism as:
A belief that the Southern people are a unique ethnic group on the North American continent derived from a rich European heritage — namely Anglo and Celtic — with a unique Christian moral foundation. Southerners have their own traditions, history, and culture. They have a right to preserve that rich heritage and ethnic identity. Most Southern Nationalists believe that the only way to preserve that heritage is to secede and rule ourselves.
League of the South president Dr. Michael Hill writes of “organic nationalism” based on kinship and attachment to a real place as something more fundamental and sturdier than a particular form of government such as “liberal democracy.” A nation may choose to govern itself democratically, but democracy cannot provide a substitute for nationhood:
Majority rule only works where there is already a consensus of sorts on the fundamental issues within a society. For instance, in a Christian country that enjoys a high degree of homogeneity in its racial and ethnic make-up, language, institutions, and inherited culture, most matters up for a vote are superficial policy issues. They don’t tamper with the agreed-upon foundations of the society. However, in a multicultural and multiracial, polyglot empire, such as ours is today, the concept of majority rule is often fraught with dire (and even deadly) consequences for the losers, especially if the winners bear a grudge.
The only function of democratic institutions today is to be manipulated by the ruling elite for the benefit of their mostly non-white clients. And despite appearances, our rulers do understand something of the importance of organic nationhood. We can see this in the contradictions of multicultural ideology, which encourages the regime’s client groups “to maintain their own cultures and languages while partaking of the largesse available to them at the expense of taxpaying citizens.”
In any case, a takeover by outsiders will mark the end of “liberal democracy” as well as our nation, since our new masters will have neither the desire nor the capacity to preserve institutions developed by Europeans for Europeans.
Southern Nationalism and white advocacy
The authors of The Honorable Cause all appear to be racially aware, and reject misguided “Rainbow Confederate” efforts to find common ground between the thought of the old South and today’s dominant ideology. The overlap between their aims and beliefs and the work of American Renaissance is thus considerable, but far from perfect. This can be seen in the book’s occasional polemical asides directed against “White Nationalism.”
The authors of The Honorable Cause have some valid points to make. A nation is defined not merely racially but also in terms of territory, language, religion, and shared historical experience. As the confluence of all these sources of attachment, nations command far more intense loyalty than races defined biologically.
Yet, if much is gained, much is lost. One contributor, Neil Kumar, roundly declares: “We do not give one hoot about the fate of New York, California, Illinois, Ohio or any other state not represented by the thirteen stars on each of the national flags of the Confederate States of America . . . . Northern Whites have been, and arguably still are, our most pernicious foes.” By contrast, this publication’s concerns include our racial brethren in the darkest reaches of Vermont and Minnesota — and even abroad. The world has changed greatly since 1865, and many of today’s Northerners are no longer “Yankees” in any meaningful sense; the descendants of post-1865 immigrants to the North such as Italian- and Polish-Americans are among the least vulnerable of our contemporaries to egalitarian utopianism. On the other hand, urban centers in the South have become strongholds of the dominant ideology, and this cannot be entirely blamed on carpetbaggers and coastal transplants.
Mr. Kumar also writes that “many prominent White Nationalists today heap scorn upon the South and our Confederate heritage.” Whoever he may have in mind, it does not include readers of American Renaissance, who — Southerner and Northerner and even European alike — admire the South as a concrete expression of European blood and spirit.
Another contributor writes: “White Nationalist content producers are allowed to thrive because elites know they will never succeed.” But is the regime harsher on Southern Nationalists than on white advocates? We all look the same to it. As noted above, The Honorable Cause is currently selling well on Amazon.com, where several of Jared Taylor’s books are banned.
Southern Nationalism and the non-white population of the South
One of the most serious obstacles to Southern secession, of course, is the presence of large racial minorities: blacks going back to colonial times and mestizos (“Hispanics”) who have arrived more recently. Both groups enjoy obvious benefits from federal patronage and, as Padraig Martin writes, “would oppose secession if they believed it would result in their subjugation.” He looks to the Irish national struggle at the turn of the last century for clues as to how to win them over:
Large blocs of minority Protestants were fearful of an Irish Catholic ascendency and the potential for post-independence retribution. This fear was exploited in Northern Ireland, leading to decades of strife and violence. Meanwhile, in the South — the Republic of Ireland — Irish Nationalists made a concerted effort to invite Protestants to the table. In fact, the flag itself represents an olive branch offered by the Catholic majority to the Protestant minority: green represents the Catholics, orange represents the Protestants, and white represents peace between the two. At no time did the Irish Catholics who led the War of Independence surrender their identity or subordinate their right to freedom to placate Protestant minorities. They simply recognized that they needed to deal with a Protestant minority in a practical way.
Does Mr. Martin believe that blacks and mestizos in the South can be embraced in a similar spirit?
Dr. Hill urges a simpler solution to the mestizo population: “They do not belong here and must be deported, and the borders sealed against them.” But the larger black population has lived in the South virtually for as long as whites have, and even Dr. Hill feels unable to deny them all claim on the region. The best he offers is: “We will have to work out some arrangement based on goodwill from both sides.”
The obstacles to such goodwill are, especially on the black side, great. The current regime benefits from keeping blacks in a state of fear with the preposterous notion that a white South no longer under its boot heel would quickly restore slavery and lynching; hence the ongoing propaganda about “Southern racism” and “neo-confederacy.” But even if Southern Nationalists can shout loudly enough to be heard over all this noise, their actual intentions may not win over many blacks. An independent South would surely abolish racial preferences, limit welfare, and strictly enforce criminal laws (“mass incarceration”). That would work to the long-term benefit of blacks, but the average black voter is not much given to long-term thinking and will see only immediate disadvantages.
One contributor does appear to deny blacks all claim on the territory of the South: Neil Kumar writes that the South “is ours, and ours alone,” and among his criticisms of unnamed “White Nationalists” is that “many” of them “have even suggested giving large swaths of the South to black people.” But if this is not done, the black proportion of an independent South will be about double that of the current United States. Southern Nationalists show little appetite for restoring statutory racial segregation, but what would be the alternative? Integration? How would that be better than what they have under the Washington regime?
The advantages of Southern Nationalism over a racial perspective do not appear to include solutions to such quandaries.
A home for the heart
I have stressed these issues, but my approach risks conveying a misleading impression of The Honorable Cause, for only a small part of the book addresses them. A cause such as Southern Nationalism is more than a political conundrum, and one of the strengths of the Southern Tradition is that it knows itself to be inspired by human attachments difficult to put into words — which is one reason for the continuing importance of symbols such as the battle flag.
Highlights of the present book include radio host James Edwards’ account of how he conveys a sense of Southern tradition and belonging to his young children by visiting the unspectacular but friendly small towns where his ancestors grew up, and by emphasizing “Dixie O’Hara’s” meditations on the feminine side of Southern life as expressed in cooking, clothing, and devotion to family. One contributor stresses the importance of myth through a fictional account of a Southern Männerbund, or brotherhood. Two contributors focus on the South’s Christian heritage.
As editor Padraig Martin notes in the introduction, “We want to stimulate your mind, but we really want to inspire your heart.” This the 12 authors will surely do, even for readers outside the Southern region and tradition.

To be more precise: how will an older white population — outnumbered, sometimes badly outnumbered, among the youngest two generations, in numerous southern states — defeat and control a non-white / Hispanic population that has a much lower median age and a slightly better fertility rate?
Now, if the movement expressly includes, welcomes, and celebrates Hispanic whites, and defines that broadly to include millions of almost-white mestizo who identify as white, it might have a chance. Maybe.

I’ve taken to speaking openly and negatively about current and past neocons (Paul Ryan) in Republican settings and at Republican events especially with regard to the implicit denigration of southerners by certain high profile R officials during the Charlottesville episode where silencing critics of the statue iconoclasm was justified (in the neocon mind) by the supposed higher interest of always preserving the prerogative of Jews to silence any speaker they dislike even when their group interest in the speaker is incidental to the matter at hand. The mere presence of Nazi larpers at that event came to define the event because R officials amplified the neocon messaging and displaced the interest of southerners in the fate of the statue with the desire of Jews to silence Nazis whenever and wherever they speak. Such formulations cannot be tolerated.
I’ve found that neocons react explosively to the idea that their group interests are not and should not always be treated as paramount. In fact, I sense they cannot even contemplate another group’s interests as legitimate much less more legitimate. Similarly, when presented thusly I find that regular people immediately grasp the perversion of silencing the most interested parties, the southerners, in order to accommodate the least interested party, the neocons and come to view the behavior of the elected R officials involved (with the exception of Trump who put the southerners first) in an unfavorable light.
I think highlighting these episodes with an explicit condemnation of the behavior of neocon accommodating R officials is the best way to reduce the influence of the neocons over the R party. The neocons have gotten far by being willing to turn their enemies into pariahs and by having no fear condemning others. Southerners should adopt these tactics.
These ideological disputes are meaningless as long as there is no military force behind you. You will be able to make pacts with influential cartels of latinos and with gangs of niggers when your pickups with heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, stingers will patrol your territory and reconnaissance drones will hang in the air 24/7 and when your tanks will be at checkpoints near your cities. Then you will be able to launch a system of direct democracy, with a user-friendly interface for smartphones and computers, with access to any numbers, statistics, graphs, forecasts, with open and free source code, and each of your people will be able to contribute to the management of your state, like participants in the development of FOSS. The negros are all leaving California and the south is where they are going–who wants to live with them even if you came up with a perfect government. The Constitution of the United States made membership in the Union voluntary if that’s what you are driving at. Lincoln was an innovator not only in terms of executing an illegal conquest but in imagining himself authorized to back date the origin of the powers he dreamed up for himself.

Ignores the elephant in the room: Asia
– who will have the largest navy if USA breaks up?
– who will drive economic changes that could make the American South’s agricultural economy once again lead the entire United States, as it once did in the early days of the Republic?

Just a few questions to consider.
The United States is inexorably headed towards some form of collapse. It is not a matter of if, but when, and what form this collapse will take. Current economic, social, military and demographic trends are unsustainable without something breaking and soon.
The worst outcome would be collapse into a totalitarian regime that will turn inward with vindictive rage against its own founding population – i.e. ethnically European and Christian whites – and scapegoat them for the international and domestic failures of the ruling class. The language that will rationalize this type of outcome – for those who can read between the lines – is already on the lips of the “elites”, their quislings and drips like saliva from the mouths of the grievance classes. Such totalitarian regimes can last for generations by terrorizing their populations into fear and submission.
The best outcome would be the disintegration of the existing federal and corporate power structures rendering them effectively powerless and leaving state and local authorities in charge by default. There will, of course, be huge difficulties in the face of an accompanying economic collapse. But in this scenario the advantage goes to those people – again ethnically European and Christian whites – who can quickly self-organize in the event of calamity or disaster and who have a cultural track record for self-reliance. This context will also radically change the equation for blacks, browns and queers. Their entire sustenance is dependent on current federal and corporate power and their control over the media. Without this crutch, these demographics will necessarily have to adapt, make deals or die.
As recent events have clearly shown, Whites are facing an existential threat from the Globalist coup that has occurred in the United States. We the People have been rendered effectively powerless as a result. Fortunately for Whites, the hubris of the Globalist elites has also led them to severely overplay their hand. The United States is faced with astronomical debt, a shift away from the dollar, seismic demographic changes and obvious military decline. China is the ascendant economic power and Russia has emerged as an international symbol of freedom and opposition to this tyrannical Globalist entity.
Whites have had it too easy for too long sitting at the top of America’s achievements. As a result, Whites have spiraled into apathy, insouciance, obesity, drug addition and sexual perversion. Unfortunately, it always seems to require a complete disaster for people to wake up. Let’s hope it takes the latter form where Whites can still draw on their inherent advantages. Otherwise, it will remain dark for a very long time.

The idea of “Southern Nationalism” is as dopey as it gets. There is no Southern ethnos.Not only do you have tons of Blacks, you’ve got Jews and Cubans in FL, Mexicans in TX and Cajuns, Greeks, Syrians and Italians in LA. I get it, you’re justly proud of your Scots-Irish heritage and the military valor of your forbearers. But to speak of Southern people as a nation or ethnicity is even more ridiculous than the notion that the Confederacy “withdrew” from the Civil War. You didn’t withdraw, you were whipped.
Virginia hasn’t been Southern in decades. Despite the HUGE Confederate Flag that flew right outside Tampa which was visible driving into to Cigar City on I-75, Florida hasn’t been Southern for at least 40 years from Ocala to Miami. Of course there is, it’s called states’ rights and it is not only an incredibly appealing ethos it is one that has wide appeal and isn’t limited to the South as a region. It does, however require a willingness to fight the hearts and minds battle by defending the historical south, by contradicting the internationalists and neocons and by holding up other states’ rights entities as worthy examples. Switzerland for one. Defeatism never wins.

That and by a lack of imagination by the southerners. They simply could not conceive of a politician or even personality like Lincoln gaining power and can they be blamed? The British were stunned as was the Governor of the North’s largest state, New York, by Lincoln’s brazen and casual upending of the constitutional order.
After all, at least seven states were allowed to leave by the authorities in charge of the US before Lincoln ever became anything more than a private citizen. That he 1) conceived the government to possess powers not provided by the constitution and 2) that he further thought these powers to transcend time unconstrained by decisions of earlier administrations is breathtaking.
He deserves recognition as an incredible innovator albeit of the worst possible sort.
There are only a few multicultural societies that ever succeeded in history.
However they did so as a result of the fact that the dominant group in each society enforced the cultural traditions and laws of the dominant group across the various cultures of these societies.
The first such society was the Roman Empire. Conquered societies were expected to pay tribute and abide by Roman Law as it affected such societies. For this, non-Roman societies were allowed to keep their cultural and societal traditions under the protection of Rome.
The second such society was the Ottoman Empire which maintained a peace for around 1000 years. In this society, Muslims always dominated all other groups as non-Muslim members were considered second-class citizens. Such citizens enjoyed a tremendous amount of freedoms, which were sacrosanct as long as people followed the empire’s laws.
The last such society was the Austrian Empire, which later became the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Despite the nationalistic impulses of non-Austrian societies, all were primarily loyal to the Austrian Monarchy. The success of the Austrians was predicated on diplomacy and the national boundaries that all non-Austrians were allowed to keep. The downfall of the Austrian Empire was related more to financial issues than that of multiculturalism run amok.
The United States once maintained a dominant group of Angelo-Europeans, which is what provided the US its stability even with non-Angelo-European peoples within the nation.
However, the destruction of the American Indian along with the North’s incursion into the South over the pretext that it wanted to rid the nation of slavery set in motion trends that were allowed to come to fruition under liberal lawyers after the passing of the 1964 and 1965 voting and Civil Rights Acts, both of which were well-intentioned and designed to do specific things. Had the legal profession handled such laws properly and not made them into cudgels to be used against anyone who disagreed with their social programs, the United States would probably be a very different nation today.
The other serious flaw in the US was the lack of worldly awareness by most US citizens, most of whom cannot see past their noses. Most such people became lazy and poorly read allowing mainstream outlets to be their only areas for information. As a result, few Americans really know anything about what is going on around them or in the world and simply have developed a herd mentality, which is what has allowed monsters like Obama, Clinton, and Biden to rise to power…
I don’t know enough about the Chinese warlord period, but certainly the Spanish Civil War. I see the latter as a possibility. I see us more, meaning right now, in the Weimar period with street fights between political groups and thugs. The three largest, if memory serves me right, would be the Nazi Party’s SA, the communist Spartakus, and the in-between SPD Reichsbanner men.

The greatest tragedy in US history was the Civil War where they took the very best. The South has got a bad rap over the last 150 years and it has mostly been from Northern Jews. If you live in the South you have seen, at least where I live, you see a lot of people moving here from the Northeast and Midwest. The next steps will gradually be more and more apparent as we see the gradual merging of dissident populations on the left, right, and center around the concept that we have to nurture our communities. My community is ethnically, racially, generationally, and sexually diverse who are united not on ideology but on the practical realities of life. Part of that reality is having to live in a world of lies and manipulation by the central authorities not just in government but in major corporations. Before anything can happen we must accept the realities we face everyday.
People on this site, in my view, waste a lot of time on racial characteristic and the chicanery of Jews. This is silly, yes, most degenerate street kids in the Hispanic and Black dominated thug culture (my friend teaches in middle school in Charlotte with stories that even shocked me and that’s hard to do) are in a hopeless condition but that condition is a direct result of corrupt urban politicians. Not long ago, as a Californian (stuck here), I was astounded when I had occasion to deal with a small business located in a smallish city in Alabama. The patience, politeness, and proficiency with which they handled my stupid questions and worries was a breath of fresh air. I am old, and this experience reminded me of the America I grew up in. If I could, I would move there. After all, how hard could it be to learn to enjoy country music?

Looking at the absurd and dangerous laws state legislatures sometimes pass because the members either fear getting primaried out or are under the control of certain lobbies and special interests, maybe it is reasonable for people to want to retain some checks and balances and constitutional protections. Even so, they end up looking to their state to protect them from the excesses of the federal government also.

There are still enough sectional differences and sympathies to imagine a positive result. It wouldn’t necessarily involve secession, just a legal redefining of interests and borders. The Solid South is still a thing, as is New England, Pacific Coast, Upper Mid-West, etc.. The Bill of Rights still reigns supreme but is emphasized, the U.S. Constitution still the law of the land but amended to define sovereignty.
