Lolz. It’s actually pretty funny how these former USSR boomers used to listen and like Mick Jagger and all those other bands, Jim Morrison etc., but they didn’t understand the English lyrics. It was not moribund at all, it just wasn’t as high quality or productivity as, let’s say, the German industry. There used to be relatively large textile, pharmaceuticals and appliances factories in the Baltics that shipped their product across the whole Soviet Union. There was a factory that made socks called “Aurora” (lol). We still make a lot of our own textiles, such as lingerie.

The Swedes have textiles, such as H&M, I think they use Polish and Lithuanian seamstresses. Probably in Vietnam mostly though. Nope. On Mon, 9 Dec 2019 in Paris there was a meeting to iron out Minsk II. Putin, Merkel, Zelensky and Macron attending, and the United States also agreed it would be acceptable that Kyiv traded (it’s always a trade off) autonomy for its Russian as first language speaking region in Donbass in return for Russia returning it to Ukraine and recognizing it as a part of such. Zelensky, who had got elected by promising peace–although he was vague about exactly how–and the pres Proshenko (who had overthrown Yanukovych by demos, tried to combat Donbass ‘terrorists’ then agreed to Minsk I in the face of rapid Russian regular Battalion Tactical Groups s crossing the border and making rapid advances) orchestrated demos against any concessions by Zelensky in Paris. I think you underestimate the internal pressure on Zelensky from Poroshenko–a billionaire who orchestrated the overthrow of Yanukovych because he was unwilling to break with Russia. Poroshenko was smarting at being shockingly defeated by Zelensky, who ran on ending the ‘war’ in Donbass.

The demos Poroshenko spoke at as Zelensky was preparing for the Normandy Format meeting in Paris made Zelensky realise he could be overthrown by street demos just as Yanukovych was. In Paris Zelensky said that he would not allow any federalisation of Ukraine, and would not let any external pressure decide on the Ukrainian state’s foreign policy directions. America would have been quite happy.

Yet ultimately it is unsurprising that Ukraine ended up telling Putin to get lost, that is the way sovereign states tend to behave in the real world. There’s been plenty of hoaxes in the past that even seasoned archeologists fell for, ie ‘Piltdown Man’ and ‘Drake’s Plate of Brass’, amongst other infamies, and an older archeologists could be tempted to fake some ‘major discovery’ at the end of their career.

However, after looking at a variety of archeological websites who can’t fault the find and checking out the archeologist’s website (see link below) who made the discovery, which describes in some detail the great lengths they went to verify the cannon belonged to the Coronado expedition, ie there was a host of other very time specific medieval artifacts discovered with it, besides metallurgical testing, the claim that the cannon belonged to the Coronado expedition appears legit.

Yes, I was going to mention that small parts of Ukraine would’ve been the only exception there, but that, while unpleasant, is relatively minor. There doesn’t have to be a deal, only an acceptance of those realities. The situation speaks for itself. “Agreements” don’t mean much anymore. Look at what Russia is trying to do in Ukraine, after being a signatory to the Budapest Memorandum, agreeing to respect Ukraine’s borders and sovereignty.

If a much larger country with twice or three times the per capita GDP offered to annex Russia, Russians would not fight back.* They figured that Ukrainians wouldn’t, either.

For this reason, Putin is limited in terms how many people he can draw upon. Mass mobilization of all men is out of the question, if he could do that he would have, but he cannot. He is forced to rely on prisoners (this number is running out) and on people who are willing to kill Ukrainians for money (this number is stable because he keeps increasing the amount money to be paid, but it is not infinite). So in terms of actual number of men available, the two sides are more close to even than would be assumed by the overall population discrepancy. Russia’s population advantage over Ukraine is about 5:1 but its recruitment advantage has been something like 3:2. Not enough, given that in the most recent assaults Russia is losing about 2 men for each Ukrainian. And meanwhile Russia’s economy keeps going down.

I was talking more about the power dynamics (not so much the legal aspects from the point of view of international law, although that’s important, too). More in a sense where the status quo is challenged by one actor and then other actors follow because they see that violence and breaking of rules pays off and will go unpunished. These occurrences started before ChatGPT became available. At least before I started using it, and I only use it sometimes for work related stuff or to look something up really quickly (as a short summary). However, these occurrences have happened relating to things that I never type in about on ChatGPT – I’ve never used ChatGPT for searching for any kind of items or services that I want to purchase or have a need for. Or anything health related.

Yes, I thought it was big data or search history but it’s too much of a coincidence (and things that I think of are very specific and I have not searched, ever). Also, how closely it follows the thought – it shows up either in 10 minutes or within an hour or so. It feels very creepy and super invasive. Not at all like the normal ads that pop up based on previous search or similar items that have been browsed before.

There were a couple of instances of this strange kind of mimicking as well. As in, certain things that were done in private and then exactly those same activities show up on some content (like YouTube shorts). The only way I thought that was possible would’ve been through the phone camera, but how is the camera picking anything up when it’s supposed to be turned off.. or facing the ceiling… or in a different room even. 🙁
