I bought comics in the early 1970s and always preferred Marvel over DC, back then at least the art was superior and Spider-Man seemed much cooler than Superman. Of course at 12-13 years old I paid little attention to the (((message))) being sent and honestly it was probably pretty tame back then. Batman was a lot more campy back then, as were all of the DC characters. I’m guessing that Marvel pretty much dominated DC in the late 1960’s through 1970’s. It was from the 1919 pulp fiction called “The Curse of Capistrano.” It was written by a white guy, Johnston McCulley, who was churning out pulp and hoping something would sell. He had no clue where this would all end up.

The 1920 movie starred the original movie action hero, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. He was the king of silent pictures, making a ton of movies. Since they were all silent they have no audience now. His son, Douglas Jr, also became a star doing pretty much the same sort of stuff.
